How should a subordinate communicate with his chief correctly?

Every employee sooner or later reaches the moment when he needs to deal with a chief directly. The higher the range of the chief, the stronger the feeling of internal discomfort is from the expectation of communication with him. There is a scheme of provision productivity of such a communication, according to which it is necessary in the frames of preparation for a conversation with a chief to define such moments, as the goal of a meeting, a problem, variants of its resolve, arguments of their benefits. The offered scheme disposes for a productive dialogue, where both sides would be able to add useful ideas for solution of the question. However, it is not enough to know this method, you should also be able to implement it in practice.

Here below there are several tips, which would help you to be more convincing and achieve the desired result:  

  • Do not get stuck on peculiarities of your position: every position has its own specifics, which a chief not obligatory must know and understand. That is why the important rule here is to speak about the project more and speak less about the details of your work.  
  • Do not come with a problem:  come with ways to solve it in order to be on the same wavelength with the one, who the final decision depends on. In other cases it could seem that you unload your responsibility on other shoulders.  
  • Get ready: decide before a meeting, which questions a chief could ask and think over the answers to them in advance.  
  • Start your conversation by voicing your goal: it should be strictly formulated in advance. The fewer introductions and “water”, the better. You could also use presentation, if it is justified only in certain situations.  
  • Confirm the statements with facts, as for your value judgments, guesses and opinions- it is better to leave them with you. Instead, let the facts work for you.   
  • Offer different variants of solution.  It is not a choice to agree or disagree with the only offered variant. What is more, there is a possibility that this variant could be rejected. That is why the right approach here is 2-3 ideas, even more are better. Take part in decision making.
  • Be in the role of a shop assistant: softly describe your advantages, which your

company would get as the result of innovations. And, vice versa, what will be if nothing is undertaken. Here it is important to do so that it is comfortable for the person to agree with you.  

The main recommendation: you should come to such meetings with the mood to solve the issue and use your time the most effectively, but not to waste it in talkie-talkie.
