How to make a public performance effective?

15.06.2021

How to make your speech interesting and memorable, and most importantly – achieving the set goal? Present an idea, interest investors, please the employer – in any of these cases, figuratively speaking, we are selling something. This means that the same laws work in achieving performance effectiveness as in sales. No less useful are the technologies of public speaking, built with the human psyche in mind.

Many people are embarrassed to speak in public, they are afraid of the public, they are not confident in themselves. These tips will be helpful to them.

The general scheme of a purposeful speech should be as follows: to grab the audience’s attention – to keep the audience’s attention – to present the essence of your business – to convince the audience, to attract it to your side – to get feedback on the goal achievement.

To grab attention, it can be useful to use the techniques of provocation, involving a question, launching an intrigue, breaking the template. It helps to liven up the audience or interlocutor, arouse curiosity and interest.

You can retain attention by activating the emotionality of the audience or the interlocutor. For this, imagery, metaphors, examples, visual representations and associations, analogies with the audience itself or the interlocutor, catching them directly, can be useful.

To “sell” the idea conveyed to the audience by means of a speech, the technique “from problem to solution” helps. The audience or interlocutor needs to be shown that they have or around them a problem that needs to be solved, or an opportunity that needs to be taken advantage of. And then clearly and reasonably present your version of the solution or implementation. Specific values and numbers can be very helpful here. An appeal to values that are appropriate to the context of the speech is also often triggered.
